Under the Ice
Under the ice there’s water - I used to flow freely But now sit still, shivering Beneath a glassy ceiling. I build an alien world here Strange creatures, green grasses But it’s not the same river valley I came flowing out of, Splashing freely on the rapids. The sun filters down through Algae, dimmer and dimmer Not the same clear reflection I Shone back from mountain lakes; Murky like where my muddy river Meets the sandy, salty sea. Back then, how my waves tossed, And the tides pulled monthly; I was powerful there, once - I tore ships apart, once - Until I scattered on the winds And rode the clouds, Reborn in thunder and light, To refresh the land, Seeping through the soil into Nighttime rivers that carve Their names on the walls of Underworld caves.
